Extranets

Extranets are Semi-private networks that allow two or more organizations to share information.  They are setup for suppliers or partners to have secure access to a section of an organization's internal networks.  Typically they provide the following services:

  • Email
  • FTP
  • Shared Calendars
  • Collaborative working environments
  • WWW (World Wide Web) access
  • Web browser based applications

Access is restricted by implementing an authentication and encryption solution such as VPNs or SmartCards.  Most Extranets only allow the outside companies access to very specialized and limited resources, like inventory management, R&D resources, shared client files, shared project documents.
